Visit to the European commission’s joint research Centre (JRC) in Ispra, Italy
10.06.2025

As the recipient of the Danubius Young Scientist Award, Dr. Marija Banožić from the Faculty of Agronomy and Food Technology at the University of Mostar visited the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra. The JRC, one of the European Union’s key scientific resources, comprises 39 scientific units and more than 2,000 experts. The Centre provides independent, evidence-based scientific and technical support for EU policies, with the aim of addressing major societal and economic challenges.

On the first day of the visit, the activities of the JRC and opportunities for collaboration with the Centre were presented, while guest researchers showcased their scientific projects. The second day was dedicated to individual work with researchers whose scientific interests aligned with those of the visitor. In this context, a visit was made to the F2 research unit, specialized in research related to novel food. During this visit, an analysis of titanium dioxide in confectionery products was conducted using Raman spectroscopy, along with insights into the latest findings on nanoparticles in food products and dietary supplements. The final day included tours of the Water Quality Monitoring and Analysis Laboratory, the Meteorological Tower, and the Structural Testing Laboratory for dynamic load impacts.

Such experiences not only provide a unique insight into the work of one of the largest research centres in Europe but also contribute to fostering a sense of belonging to the European scientific community.
