Students of the FGAG at the University of Mostar achieve excellent results at the 3rd Croatian conference on earthquake engineering
24.03.2025

The 3rd Croatian Conference on Earthquake Engineering (3CroCEE) was held in Split from March 19 to 22, 2025, organized by the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the University of Zagreb, the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture, and Geodesy at the University of Split, and the Croatian Centre for Earthquake Engineering.

As part of the conference, the first student competition in testing building models on the educational earthquake table Quanser Shake Table II took place. Students from civil engineering faculties in Zagreb, Split, Osijek, Rijeka, Mostar, and other universities participated in the competition with the expert support of their mentors.

A total of eight teams, each consisting of four members, previously prepared AutoCAD drawings and developed 3D numerical models of constructions. Over two days, using balsa wood, they built and prepared their experimental models for testing, which was carried out on the third day of the conference.

A professional team composed of mentors from each faculty conducted the testing, analyzed the results, and scored the models according to pre-agreed criteria. These included measuring and comparing oscillation frequencies, measuring displacement at the top and bottom of the models, measuring acceleration at the top, checking for stiffness reduction, assessing the usable floor area of the ground floor, visual appearance, and adherence to modeling rules.

The team of students from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture, and Geodesy at the University of Mostar, consisting of Grgo Jukić, Petar Babić, Nikola Franjo Zovko, and Ante Slipčević, under the mentorship of Associate Professor Dr. Mladen Kustura, achieved excellent results in this competition. Their model performed exceptionally well and demonstrated a high level of alignment between the numerical and experimental models, showcasing their expertise and dedication.

This success is of great importance for the Faculty, as their work and achievements at the European level have significantly contributed to the promotion of our Faculty. We congratulate our students and their mentor on this outstanding achievement and thank them for presenting our Faculty in the best possible light.
