Cody Gakpo scored the opening goal for the Netherlands in the 20th minute. The same player assisted Donyell Malen in the 83rd minute for another goal. Malen, a Dutch forward, sealed the final score of 3-0 in the third minute of added time.

The Dutch entered this match as clear favorites, despite finishing third in their group stage, while Romania progressed to the round of 16 as winners of their group. The head-to-head record heavily favored the Netherlands, with Romania managing only one win in 13 previous encounters.

However, despite the history of their matchups and the majority view of experts, Romania applied considerable pressure on the Dutch defense early in the match in Munich.

In the 2nd minute, Ianis Hagi had a promising opportunity, but Denzel Dumfries prevented the ball from reaching the Romanian midfielder and unintentionally injured his opponent. Hagi returned to play with a head bandage. In the 8th minute, reminiscent of his more famous father, Hagi evaded several Dutch players but did not find a shooting opportunity. Romania's best chance in front of the Dutch goal came in the 14th minute. After a solo run, Dennis Man decided to shoot from outside the penalty area, but the ball flew over the crossbar.
