One of the best Croatian tennis players of all time and former Wimbledon finalist has passed away
22.12.2023

At the age of 85, Boro Jovanović, a former Wimbledon finalist in doubles with Nikola Pilić and one of the most successful Croatian tennis players in history, has passed away.

The Croatian Tennis Association announced the news of Jovanović's death in their statement, which we share.

"One of the greatest Croatian tennis players of all time, Boro Jovanović, is no longer with us. He passed away at the age of 85, leaving an indelible mark on Croatian and world tennis. Last year, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award in tennis from the Croatian Tennis Association, in recognition of his immense contribution to the sport and the achievements he accomplished. With Nikola Pilić, he was a Wimbledon finalist in doubles in 1962, and twice (once with Pilić, once independently) was declared the best athlete of Yugoslavia in the traditional selection by Sportske novosti.

He won gold at the Mediterranean Games in doubles with Pilić and bronze in singles. In the professional era, he achieved several notable results in some of the biggest tournaments, comparable to today's ATP Masters 1000 competitions.

Born in Zagreb on October 21, 1939, after ending his playing career in 1974, he became a tennis coach. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) awarded him in 2016 for his special contribution to the Davis Cup. The date of the final farewell will be announced later, and we express our deepest condolences to Boro Jovanović's family," announced the Croatian Tennis Association
