Ljubušanka, multiple boxing champion, and a sergeant in the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina
27.05.2024

Ljubušanka Katarina Vištica, a member of the 4th Infantry Brigade of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina with the rank of sergeant, is also a multiple boxing champion. She fondly remembers her first boxing training session, which, she says, was love at first sight, as reported by jabuka.tv.

"I had a relative who trained boxing, and I asked him for a recommendation on what to train to feel better. One evening, I went to training with him, and I literally fell in love with the sport. I started training twice a day, every day, rain or snow," she says. Initially, she just wanted to do boxing recreationally. However, at the urging of her coach at the time, she agreed to participate in the national championship in Brčko.

"In the final, I defeated my opponent in the second round with a classic knockout, and that's how it all began. Simply put, once you enter this sport, you stay. For four years during high school, no one knew I was boxing. At that time, there were prejudices," says Vištica, noting that her father was a soldier and an inspiration for her to join the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina five years ago.

"I went through testing, passed the phases, medical examination, only to tell my family at home just two or three days before leaving for basic military training. Of course, it was a shock, but my dad hoped I would endure, and that's how it all started," says this woman from Ljubuški, adding that women in the Armed Forces of BiH are equal to men. "Women are capable of everything men are. In fact, in some situations, women perform better than men. It has been scientifically proven that women notice some details better and see mistakes, so they will correct something that men cannot," says Vištica.

She adds that initially, it was difficult for her to balance all her military and sports obligations, but she always had the support and understanding of her superiors.

"With the help of my commanders and the commanders of the 4th Infantry Brigade of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina, who always accommodated me, I continued to achieve excellent results. I have been the reigning champion of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the super welterweight category in boxing for 14 years in a row. Last year, in 2023, I won the European belt in Ljubuški in the 72.5-kilogram category and also became an international or world champion. As for Bosnia and Herzegovina, this is a historic achievement, and I hope we will not stop there," says Vištica, not hiding her desire to progress in her career in the future.

"I am attending an advanced course, and I will not stop at this rank because the Armed Forces of BiH provide an opportunity for all young people to progress. I am currently finishing my degree in kinesiology, and I will continue my education to become an officer," says Katarina Vištica.

Opportunity for Progress

She is proud to be part of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina. "You are doing an incredible job, and you have the opportunity to advance in your career. Although everyone would like it to happen overnight, it cannot. You have to go through a process, and when the family works, everything works. It's a bit strange when you have to go to the field for a week, but with the support of the family, everything is possible," she concludes.
