BiH showcased in Greece at prestigious exhibition on hellenistic jewelry
21.11.2024

Bosnia and Herzegovina is presenting its cultural heritage at a major international exhibition in Greece focused on jewelry from the Hellenistic era, as confirmed by the National Museum of BiH. The art of jewelry making reached its zenith during the Hellenistic period, which followed the conquests of Alexander the Great, reports Večernji.ba.

What messages did the iconography of Hellenistic jewelry convey? What styles were preferred by aristocratic women? How did brides adorn themselves before their wedding ceremonies? Which jewelry accompanied adults to the afterlife, and which pieces were reserved for those who departed too soon? How were these exquisite examples of ancient goldsmithing crafted? Can the Hellenistic tradition inspire contemporary creators?

These and many other questions are explored in the exhibition "Art in Gold: Jewelry in the Hellenistic Era." Featuring contributions from 30 Greek museums and Ephorates of Antiquities, alongside five international museums, the exhibition showcases unique collections of Hellenistic gold jewelry (323–30 BCE), as announced by the National Museum of BiH.

Among the highlights is a substantial selection of intricate jewelry pieces from the "Thessaly/Karpenisi Hoard," jointly owned by the National Archaeological Museum in Athens and the Benaki Museum. Bosnia and Herzegovina’s cultural heritage is represented by artifacts from the renowned jewelry hoard of Ošanići near Stolac. For the first time in history, 27 bronze, iron, and silver objects from this collection are being displayed in Greece, offering a representative glimpse into this famous treasure trove.

The exhibition is complemented by informational texts, graphics, videos, and animations illustrating the fundamental techniques of jewelry making. Contemporary works by Peter Bauhuis, Akis Goumas, Patrick Davison, Pure Ferreiro, Anastasia Kandaraki, Lucia Massei, Dimitris Nikolaidis, and Despina Pantazopoulou—drawn from the Benaki Museum collection—will also be displayed alongside the ancient artifacts.

The exhibition "Art in Gold: Jewelry in the Hellenistic Era" is part of the "Benaki Museum Collections and Contemporary Design" initiative under the "Attiki" program, a partnership agreement for 2021–2027 co-funded by the European Union. It will remain open at the Benaki Museum in Athens until April 27, 2025.
